Re: Dock by the Lake
Ted isn't unjaded but he's accepting, if you asked him the distinction would be unjaded people would wander around without a wand and expecting everyone else to behave themselves, accepting people know that not everyone is perfect and watch out for themselves but don't push people away based on one action. Unless that's murder or something like that... Anyway Ted didn't reply to her, instead he stretched out his arms and leaned forwards to stretch out his legs, knowing that if he didn't he'd regret it.

Marlene doesn't see the difference and thinks that either way, you make yoruself vulnerable. She watches him stretch out his legs; her face is still disinterested, as if she's simply looking at him because his movement has drawn her lazy attention and she can't be bothered looking away again. Curiosity gets the better of her, and being somewhat blunt, she asks, "What do you want, Tonks?" There's no aggression in her voice, no wariness. Just curiosity. He wouldn't be here if he wasn't hoping to get something out of the exchange, surely.

Ted looked over at her, "Nothing, I'm just enjoying relaxing after my run and it's nice to sit with someone for company. Do you always assume everyone needs something?" Ted just enjoys being around people. Hufflepuff trait.

"No, I don't assume everyone needs something. But everybody wants something. You clearly want company, for whatever reason," Marlene fires back, regarding Ted coolly as she exhales.

Ted looked over at her with a steady gaze, "I never said I wanted company, I said it was nice. Not everything has an ulterior motive." What was it with him and wary or judgmental women lately?

Re: Dock by the Lake
Inner!Lily is just staring at Ted right now and wants to know what that's all about. Marlene just shrugs. "Whatever helps you sleep at night, mate." She clearly doesn't believe him. There's no 'just because' in Marlene's world, only agendas either hidden or open. She smokes her cigarette all the way down to the butt, which she again flicks into the water before taking her wand and vanishing it.

Re: Dock by the Lake
Actually Ted was talking about Marlene and Andi but whatever. He watched her vanish the cigarette from the water with a slight smile on his face. She couldn't be as mean and tough as she pretended to be, or at least not as mean, not if she vanished the butts. If she was really the bitch she seemed like she would have just let them float away in the water, uncaring the the consequences.

Inner!Lily says that's alright, then. Even though she can be pretty judgemental herself.
Marlene glances at Ted, and realises he's smiling as he watches her. It's unnerving, she thinks, and her nose wrinkles in awkward confusion. After what feels like forever, but is probably no more than 30 seconds in reality, she cracks. "What?"

Ted looked away and over the lake a light smirk playing on his lips, "Don't you ever think that sometimes not knowing something is better? Or do you always have to ask everything that comes to mind?"

"You don't know a damn thing about what comes to my mind," Marlene snaps, and reaches for her pack of cigarettes to take another and light it.

Ted shrugged, "No I don't, you're right." He decided to go on a whim and possibly jeopardize his health and he put his hand on hers, stopping her from getting another cigarette, "Why do you smoke?"

Re: Dock by the Lake
OhGod Ted, do you want to die!?
Marlene almost jumps in surprise at the sudden contact; only her quick reflexes saves her from anything more pronounced than a slight twitch. She pointedly pulls her hand away from Ted's, but does not continue with her previous task. The packet stays closed in her hand. She gives Ted a sharp look, a warning, then shrugs. "Because I like it. Not like I'm gonna die of cancer, mate." Even if Marlene thought she'd live long enough for that to be an issue, she's a witch, and magical medicines are far superior to muggle ones.

Ted's a daring fellow. He shrugged and tucked his hands into his pockets, "I guess not, understandable but you don't seem like someone who would want an addiction or a weakness like that." Ted is really sitting chewing on his own feet now.

"Well now we're just going 'round in circles, Tonks. 'Cause we've already established that you don't know a damned thing about me," Marlene says, and resumes her task of taking out a cigarette and lighting it with the tip of her wand. She exhales and looks over at him, an expectant expression on her face, her entire attitude screaming 'well, what now?' This guy seems to somehow have an opinion or thought on everything, so Lene figures that the silence of her conversational victory is too much to hope for at this stage.

Re: Dock by the Lake
Ted looked over at her again, she was right in saying that he didn't know anything about her but that didn't mean he didn't want to find out. Not that he thought telling her that would do anything so for a change he kept quiet. Staring out over the lake he chuckled as he saw one of the squid's tentacles breach the surface.

Re: Dock by the Lake
Marlene is about to snap at him once more, assuming that he's laughing at her again for some ridiculous reason of his own devising, but then she spots the movement as well. Usually when she sees the squid waving about like a mad thing, she's alone, so she doesn't think twice about the carefree laugh she lets out and the lazy hand that waves back, trailing cigarette smoke back and forth in the air. For a moment, she's alone and light and something as stupid as waving at a creature from the deep who somehow has ended up in a lake is perfectly natural.
