Gringotts Empty Re: Gringotts

Post  Miela August 26th 2011, 5:04 pm

[Anything in italics is ‘said’ in Japanese]

Miela had walked pass the streets of Diagon Alley and she was amazed at the sheer display of magic. Back home, if anyone had even shown a little sign of magic, they would have been ostracized by the village they are living in, and every single bad thing would be blamed on them, and the hate accumulates till the ‘witch’ or ‘wizard’ is killed. That’s why most families of magic users tend to stay close to themselves and away from civilization, like the Hyakki and Ningyo Clan. The more inaccessible the place, the more likely a clan would set up their home there.

Now, standing at the front steps of Gringotts, she is astounded at the snowy white building that lay before her. On the door was an inscription that warned against stealing from the bank, and as Miela past through a pair of bronze doors and then a pair of silver doors, she wondered, would anyone be so silly as to try and break-in.

Entering the lobby, Miela once again felt the same sort of amazement as when she had first entered the Hogwarts Kitchen and seen the sheer number of house elves. Here, in this place, there were goblins everyone, and the entire lobby was filled with goblins who sat at individual counters, some counting money, some counting gemstones, and one even exchanging for paper money!

Not knowing quite what to do, Miela just stood there, until she heard a gravelly voice speak up behind her.

“Well, don’t just stand there, we don’t have all day. Come on now, which vault do you want to open?”

Turning around, Miela saw a goblin hunched over a large pile of gold and silver coins, and wondered what they are for. As she walked up the goblin, she started to speak “Excuse me, this is my first time here, and I am not quite sure what to d-”

“Key.”

“I am sorry?”

“I said key. Your key. You have it don’t you? If you don’t then you have no business here, do I have to call security?”

“No, that wouldn’t be necessary, here.” Miela said as she passed over the key that Dumbledore had given her. “Here is the key. May I know how to get to my vault?”

The goblin kept silent for a long time, only taking the time to peer over his counter at Miela, back to the key, flip it over in his hand, and then back to peer at Miela again. After the sixth time her has done it, Miela was annoyed and asked “Is there a problem?”

The goblin looked down into her eyes deeply, and while crooking a finger at a guard, replied, “That would have to depend. May I know who gave this key to you?”

Miela grew worried. What if Tom the bartender was lying when he said that Dumbledore left it for her? She cursed herself for forgetting another lesson: Never trust anyone, and here she was, about to get in trouble because she decided to trust the words of a bartender in a dark dingy bar. This would cost her.

As all this thoughts ran through her head, on the outside, she was a portrait of cool and calm. Looking at the goblin directly in the eye, she said, “Tom the bartender at The Leaky Cauldron said that Professor Dumbledore of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry left this for me. Once again, is there a problem.”

Both the goblin and herself understood that her last sentence wasn’t a question. Looking somewhat relieved at hearing Dumbledore’s name, the goblin hopped off his chair, and replied, “Not at all Miss Hyakki, this way if you would please. I would have the honor of personally leading you down to your vault.”

Miela was surprised. As far as she was concerned, for the past 12 minutes and 42 seconds she had been there, she had seen no goblin get off their chair to ascot any customer down to the vaults. They have all called for another goblin, which would come to fetch the customer down.

“Miss Hyakki?” The goblin called out once again.

Miela turned to follow the goblin down to the vaults below, as the goblin started on a tirade of self-introduction and information about Gringotts, the vaults and the currency.

She learned that the goblin’s name is Dripnok, and he is in charge of her vault and he was so happy that he got to see for no one has ever entered that vault for the last 11 years, and he has always been hoping to get to see it and open it and oh look here they are!

As Miela got off the cart, They stood right in the middle of a large circular chasm about 20 feet wide and directly opposite from where they stood, was a huge door that is golden brown, but on a closer look, it wasn’t golden brown on the right, it was slightly blue, but it was reflecting what was on the left, like what happens with the sea.

As Miela tried to step closer, Dripnok suddenly reached out and cried “Wait!”, but it was too late, the line has been crossed, and suddenly, the entire chasm was filled with the unholy cries of the ones long past, crying out their frustration, their anger, and their agony at the living, who dared to trespass their scared grounds.

“Stand behind me!” Dripnok yelled, and he grabbed a pair of Suzu (Shinto Shrine Bells. Here.) and threw one to Miela while shaking his violently, while making his way towards the door. Miela immediately understood what was going on, this was a purification technique. Spirits can be appeased with a few types of instruments, one of them being the Suzu. As Miela shake hers, she chanted some verses that Toji Ojisama had once taught her. Being in the Hyakki clan, it is often that they encounter such spirits as they deal with earth magic and the dead.

Slowly, the sound of the bells grew louder as the cries of the spirits grew weaker and finally died down. Dripnok took the bell from Miela and placed them both by the door. The retrieved the key in his coat and using his left hand, placed it in a key hold in the golden brown side of the door and turned it anti-clockwise, while placing his left palm in the right imprinted space, and turning it clockwise simultaneously for a full circle.

As the huge doors swung open, Miela marveled at the steps taken to protect whatever was on the inside, and even Sanshi give a purr of glee at what awaits.

Alas, after the doors opened, there seems to be another door right behind it. This time, it was a simple round rice paper sliding door, often seen back home. As Miela waited for Dripnok to open it, he suddenly stood back and bowed, saying “Now Miss Hyakki, if you would please.”

Miela was confused, and turned to face Dripnok. “What do you mean?”

“This is as much as I am able to do. I was told that when you see the door, you would understand how to work it.”

Miela turned back to the door, very much aware that Dripnok was waiting in anticipation for something, anything to happen, but she found his curiosity weird. It was just a normal sliding door, how much effort would it take to slide it open?

As her fingers touched the door, Miela found herself flying through the air and with a loud crack, she found herself slammed into the wall, and if it wasn’t for Sanshi, she would have been smashed to pieces on the sharp rocks below.

Wondering what happen, Miela stood up, and was surprised to find that from where she was standing, there were words inscribed into the two panels on the back side of the first door.

When many asked, and none divulged,
Where many seek, but naught was found.
What many dreamed, though never crowned,
Why many coveted, is not profound.
Who born in sadness, yet came abounded,
Way to retrieve, only one knows how.

”What do you think it means?” Sanshi said as she padded across the chasm right back to the front of the door and put Miela down.

”I am not sure. It seems to want something from someone, but who?”

”Well, I would assume it’s you, since Professor Dumbledore gave you the keys. There must be something you could do.”

Miela thought long and hard, walked back and forth from the door, and still couldn’t think of what to do. There weren’t any clues in the inscription, it was just mambo jumbo. Frustrated, Miela took out the pouch that Dumbledore had left her, and turned it over and over in her hands, but she still could not see it. Dripnok had taken to sitting on a small boulder, disappointment and impatience written all over his face.

Looking back down into the pouch in her hands, she flipped it inside out, hoping to see if anyone stitched anything into the seams, when suddenly she saw it. What looked like emblems from the outside of the pouch, were actually talisman characters from the inside. But which one was it?

Sanshi, having noticed her sudden change in demeanor, ran up next to her. Silently, Miela passed the inside out pouch to her, and strode right up to the door with confidence.

”NO MIELA WAIT! You don’t know which one it is!”

”On the contrary, I do.”

As Miela bit thumb to allow blood to flow freely, she started drawing out the talisman needed, while chanting the spell under her breath. Once she was done, she stood back to admire her handiwork. It was beautiful. Her blood shined briefly, before soaking into the rice paper, and staining the entire door red.

”Miela, I really don’t think this is a good idea. You don’t know if it is the correct one.”

Turning to look at Sanshi in the eye, Miela whispered softly, ”But it’s the right one. Because it is my birthright.” as she slid the door open.

Dripnok gasped and Sanshi’s eyes widen, at what laid behind Miela. Turning, she herself was overcome with gratitude, happiness, and a feeling she have only felt with one person, love.

Toji Ojisama had converted the vault into a room. In fact, it’s exactly like the one that he had when he was alive. Walking in, she realized that every single detail was taken care of, nothing was left out. She could have sworn that the room might even have been the exact same one, except that fact that that room is in Japan, there is no way it could it even be here.

Behind herself, she could hear Sanshi asking the goblin if it was even possible that a human lived here and he replied that “technically speaking, it was possible, nobody could kick you out of your vault, but this unheard of!”

Miela noticed that there was a note propped up on the table, with the word ‘ハニー’ (Honey). With trembling hands, she picked up the note, and for the second time in a month, felt tears welling up in her eyes. It was written in Toji Ojisama’s bold words. Flipping it over, the tears in Miela’s eyes spilled over and she told herself that for once in her life, she would cry, cry for the mentor she had, cry for the first friend she ever had, cry for the one who loved her more than his own grandchild.

Sanshi pounced over to where Miela was when she felt the first sob trying to break free. Cuddling Miela in her arms, she picked up the note, and saw the words. She understood why Miela had broken down. For on the note where just 8 simple words.

From now on, live your life, your way.

Gringotts Empty Re: Gringotts

Post  Miela September 1st 2011, 11:02 am

[Anything in italics is said in Japanese]

Miela walked through the doors of Gringotts and at once, noticed Dripnok at his usual counter, striding up to him; Miela just silently placed her key on his table.

Dripnok head immediately snapped up upon noticing the key. “Ah! Miss Hyakki, pleasure to see you here again, if you would please!”

Once again, Dripnok lead her down to her vault, while telling her about some ‘minor modifications’ they had in mind for her vault.

“Wait,” Miela cut in, “what do you mean by minor modifications?”

“Well, Miss Hyakki,” Dripnok replied, while inserting the key into the left door and his right palm into the right, “since the last time you were here, I have taken the liberty to talk to the council about your situation. And they have since approved of your intentions, if you ever need to use your vault as a, uh, hiding place if you will.”

Miela looked at Dripnok critically. She was extremely suspicious of this goblin. Why did he try so hard to please her? She had only met him once, and after all, he was just an employee of Gringotts, why would he be looking out for her interest?

“Why are you being so nice to me?” Miela enquired as she bit into her finger and started to chant the incantation needed to open the door.

Dripnok chuckled. “You really don’t remember do you, Miss Hyakki. It’s not a surprise, I mean, I couldn’t even recognize you at first, and you were only a year old when we parted. Miss Hyakki, or should I say, Miss Ningyo Kaori [Note that in Asia, the surname is put before the name], I-”

But before he could utter another word, Sanshi had pounced on his and had a hand right up against his throat. She growled menacingly as Miela asked harshly “Who are you?”

“grHAGFDFFDI”

“Sanshi, loosen up, he’s chocking”

“OH THANK YOU.” Dripnok coughed, “I mean no harm. There is a perfectly good reason that I know your name.”

“Oh really. Well, start reasoning” growled Sanshi.

“I was hired by the old man, Toji himself.”

“What for?”

“To wait for your arrival. Please, believe me; you have to trust me on this.”

”Sanshi, let him go.”

”BUT MIELA. YOU DON’T KNOW WHO HE IS!” yelled Sanshi.

Miela looked pointedly at Sanshi, who finally let him go, with a mutter of “You might regret this”

I’ll take my chances on that, Miela thought.

“Miss Ningyo, if I may call you that-“ Dripnok started.

“No you may not. Nobody is supposed to know that name, and nobody ever will need to, so never use that name again.”

“But but but” The goblin stuttered, pain written in his face,”It’s your birthright!”

“This is also what got my entire clan killed. Now explain to me, how do you know who I am? What do you mean by Toji Ojisama hired you? And what do you mean by the last time you saw me I was a baby?”

“Firstly, Miss, to answer your first and last question, I know who you are because I used to help the Ningyo clan. Mind you, it was strictly business, you might not recall, but your clan used to live on a small island far out into the seas, virtually unreachable, unless you knew the correct way in, and that doesn’t guarantee your clan wouldn’t sink the incoming ship. So my buddies and I were tasked with the mission of acquiring anything the clan needed from the mainland in exchange for a safe fishing spot.”

“How do I know you are telling the truth?”

“Your guardian, her tail, it’s of a dragon.”

Both Miela and Sanshi stiffened. Everyone who had ever seen Sanshi had though her tail was that of a snakes’. “That’s bulls-”

“No. I am not, and you know that is the truth. I was there when she was made, not that I was allowed, but we had our ways, when your parents got married. It’s kind of a wedding tradition back at your place. I personally always thought it was stupid, not that my opinion matters, but these creatures were taught everything you needed to know, so that if ever there was a need to leave you apart from your family, these guardians would be the ones to teach you and nurture you in their place. Oh! And she had flapping useless gills at the back of her neck, under her hair.”

Sanshi’s hand jumped to the back of her neck. Her gills were always a touchy subject. Miela giggled and stopped when Sanshi glared at her.

“Okay, so assuming that I believe all of that, you still haven’t answered my second question. What do you mean by Toji Ojisama hired you?” she asked.

“Well, when that old man’s son came and razed your land to waste on your first birthday, which is also when the guardian is binded to you. I wasn’t allowed to watch the entire thing, and they made sure it was secure after they found out we watched the making of the guardian, but right after your binding ended, the attack started. I was personally asked by your parents carried you away to a secret bunk in the mountain backs, and I kept you there till I heard the screaming had ended. At dawn, someone had found the both of us because you were crying so loudly, and they brought us to the old man himself. He declared that an innocent could not be harmed, and that I was to be released. But before I left, the old man had taken me aside and told me that he had arranged for me to come here to Gringotts to work and that one day, he would need my help and that I would need to be grateful to him for not having me killed. Like I could ever be grateful to a wizard, but regardless, I was thankful for your parents for saving my life, plus the old man gave me a safe place and a job, so I agreed.”

Miela looked at the goblin critically, she still harbored suspicions. She opened her mouth to say something when Dripnok held up a hand and said “I know what you are thinking, even after all that, why would I help you? It’s not in a goblin’s nature to be kind to your kind, especially after the way the Western community had treated us. I am not sure about the other goblins, but personally for me, while living with the Ningyo clan, never once have they tried to oppress us, nor force us to do anything we didn’t want to, and most of all, they treated us like their own family.“

Miela didn’t know what to say. She wanted to trust the goblin, but Sanshi was vehemently shaking her head. “I think it would be unwise to just trust you like that, so let’s keep it back to the way it was, strictly business. Since you are tasked with being the one to open up my vault, we might as well keep a good relationship. What do you think?”

Sanshi rolled her eyes while Dripnok though it over and nodded slowly, saying “So it’s just like the first time, which would be acceptable. I accept.”

Miela smiled at the goblin, “Alright, so what modifications would you be thinking?”

“Oh!” Dripnok said excitedly. “The council has decided to allow the installation of a bell, that links directly up to where my sit is, so that if you ever need to stay here for long periods of time, I wouldn’t be gone too long from my desk. Of course, protective measurements are being put in place in order to prevent you from entering any other vaults, which is needless to say, you are forbidden from.”

Confused, Miela turned to Dripnok. He crooked an eyebrow and cocked his head to the in her direction “No offence, Miss Hyakki”, he said haughtily, putting much emphasis on the surname, “But I know what they clan does, and what they can do so excuse me while we make certain precautions. Strictly business.”

Rolling her eyes at the goblin, Miela walked into her vault and closed her door behind her, but not before she heard the goblin yell, “Don’t take too long, Miss Hyakki, the bell isn’t installed yet and I haven’t got all day to be waiting for you outside here.”

With a sigh of annoyance at both the goblin and Sanshi’s sniggering, Miela grabbed a handful of coins and walked back out of the vault.

Gringotts Empty Re: Gringotts

Post  Victoria Black September 1st 2011, 7:10 pm

Enter Stranger but take heed
Of what awaits the sin and greed
Of those who take but do not earn
Must pay most dearly in their turn
So if you seek beneath our floors
A treasure that was never yours
Thief you have been warned,
Beware,
Of finding more than treasure there

Of course she was seeking a treasure that was hers, but she liked reading the poem.
Victoria tried to walk imperiously into Gringotts, trying to look as if she was related to her mother in the least bit. "I wish to enter vault 872!" She asked a goblin, Nagnok. They got in the cart, and began to hurtle deep down into the ground. Vee didn't mind this, she liked the ride down. She attempted to count the numbers of the vaults they went past, but they were a blur. She decided to relax, and enjoy the ride.
Five minutes later, after soaring past dragons and through waterfalls, they reached her vault. She and Nagnok alighted from the cart, and Nagnok opened the vault.
Inside were mounds of gold, old, invaluable family heirlooms, and important documents. God forbid anyone ever got in.
Vee withdrew a large pouch of gold galleons, silver sickles, and bronze knuts. It was unlikely that she would ever be in need of money when going to Honeydukes this year. Before she left, she took out a jade ring. Her mother gave her a small piece of jewelry from the vault each year she managed not to flunk. It was a lovely incentive, but unlikely that Vee would flunk anyway. Ravenclaws didn't flunk. She slipped the ring on her finger, attempting to look as if she was unaware that she was wearing several thousand galleons on her long thin finger. Once they reached the lobby, Vee got out, thanked Nagnok, and left Gringotts, putting the money in her tote.
