At the moment I am reading Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and am now of the opinion that zombies are the best thing ever to happen to Jane Austen.

TKAMB is okay. I read it when I was too little to grasp its awesomeness, I think.

All of my friends are completely the opposite. They LOVED the Gatsby. And then TKAMB is supposed to be a classic and MUST read. So I might read it to say I have.

The only classic I've actually read is The Green Mile. And thats not even really a classic. BUT AMAZING. Read it seriously.

Lucy I hated TKAMB.... almost as much as I hated Catcher in the Rye....
and I rather liked Great Gatsby.... but really.... best book I've read recently?

Romanov Prophecy by Steve Berry - its sort of like a Dan Brown book only better....

I'm reading To Kill A Mockingbird at the moment, Katie... I haven't really gotten too far to actually say whether it's good or not [middle of the first chapter] but I recently finished "Across Five Aprils", which was AMAZING - it's a book about the Civil War - and also "The Flame Trees of Thika", another great book about the author, who moved to Africa when she was young, and "Frankenstein" also was a good book, albeit depressing.

I loved the second half of TKAMB, and I read it in eight grade.
Catcher in the Rye was traumatic... same year, all guys in my group. -cries- I remember that they made me read the whore chapter out loud... and nothing else.
Right now I am reading As I Lay Dying in my English class, and it is a completely different experience that I expected. It is good, but really convoluted.
I read Slaughterhouse Five earlier this year, and loved it! It, along with 1984 and Fahrenheit 451, have been the only books I have read in English that I love.
I really want a good fantasy book for after the APs. Any suggestions? And yes, I have read LotR.

I find some of Austen readable, but some is complete and utter shit. Emma, for example, made me want to burn things.

Time Travellers wife is amazing. I really enjoyed it.

Private Peaceful by Micheal Mupurgho is simply moving. I would recommend it to anyone.

Seems we have some sci-fi geeks around here, but I saw "Catcher In The Rye" and I already want to throw up.

I have no respect for the book or the author and until today I wonder how it every became a classic.
It's like listening to Harry angst in the fifth book... on every goddamn page.

I got to go through my grandma's library in search of A Brief History of Time. I didn't find it, but I did find:
King Lear by Shakespeare, Religion and Science by Bertrand Russel, Beyond Good and Evil by Friedrich Nietzsche, Nature Thoughts edited by Louise Bachelder, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll (in a delightful old book form), Essential Writings of Karl Marx by... well duh!, A People's History of the United States by Howard Zinn, Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood by Rebecca Wells, The No. ! Ladies' Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith, On The Road by Jack Kerouac, War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy (which is in antique book form... leather binding, gilt page edges, full page color illustrations. I thought I had died and gone to heaven. I am going to take photos to show you guys! It is magnificent!!!!), The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold, AND The Complete Grimm's Fairy Tales.
I have never been so excited in my life! And she has an entire wall of book! I can't wait for APs to be over so I can really read!

My mom was an English major before she became a doctor, so she has a whole bunch of old classics and stuff. I'm tending towards stuff like Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and stuff, but it's a personal goal of mine to read as many classics as possible, because I believe the teen section in the bookstore stands for trash, and it's too hard to sort through the fantasy/sci fi stuff for what I want to read, and also I get weird looks from my mom for venturing into other sections of the bookstore. And classics are a good thing to read, I believe. However, I often fear I'm not really smart enough to fully grasp them. I'm only 15, after all, and even though I am rather intelligent, I'm kind of a ditz so it takes me a couple readings of a book to really get down to the subtleties of it, and I ALWAYS feel like I'm not learned enough to really form opinions on books. BUT, as I was raiding my mother's English major books (thank god she kept most of them) i came across a couple cool-looking books. Like The Plague by Camus, And Canterbury Tales, and a crapload of Greek plays and stuff. It's pretty cool.

I love Sherlock Holmes!!!!!!!!!! I know exactly what you mean though... I spent about half an hour reading the first sentence of "The Hound of the Baskervilles" before I finally got it. *facepalm*

Hehehe Pride and Predjudice and Zombies is awesome, a little crass, but awesome. The original I also quite like, as well as Mansfield Park, although the cousin thing is a little wierd now days and I totally disagree with the whole anti-actor stand.

As for classics, quite like the really classic Homer stuff (ie the Illiad and Odyssey) and ancient Greek Drama/Comedy. Sounds dull, but is still good a few millenia on .

My sister leant me "The last Song" today, and I finished it within 5 hours. AMAZING. I love his writing style, because I finf if the style is too hard I cant concentrate on the actual stary and get lost. So Nicholas Sparks is perfect for me. It was amazingly written, it felt real, and my sister cried four times in it.


I cried a total of none. But I'm a cold hearted bitch. Seriously. I cried when my pen broke at school, and when I found out my nan died, I welled up and that was it, and I REALLY loved my nan.

And I am reading this- Anthology of American Literature I. Colonial through Romantic and it's about 1800+ pages.
