If James wasn't so shocked, he would have tackled Remus and there would have been a fight and it would have been back. But in fact, James was very shocked that Remus had punched him, so there was no fighting. "Well maybe if he wasn't going around hexing my friends every other day I'd feel compelled to be nicer. But really I don't see why I have to nice to someone who attacks my friends." The blood now pouring from James' nose was going unnoticed at the moment, which James might regret later.
