1. I think it was more he was a replica of James in both his looks and his egocentricity.
2. There is nothing to say Lily didn't love him in time, and he/we just never found out, though I don't think she did anyway.
3. Still, while I empathize, it was wrong to do that to Harry in the first few books. After a while, I think Harry purposely pissed him off and acted like a douche, but Snape was just an asshole the first book for sure.
