Lily winced at seeing his pain, but otherwise kept a straight face, and ignored his question. "You're still hurt...you should be resting..ah..wait...Sorry. You probably were before I showed up..."

Severus ignored it, and stood up anyway, grasping the tree for support. He limps towards her, looking utterly confused, and gives her a hug. "What happened, Lily?" he said, cringing at the pain.

"Sev, sit!" Lily, as gently as she could, put her hands on his shoulders until he sat, and sat beside him. "Happy now? You shouldn't be in as much pain for your injuries, or for me. You didn't like Viktor anyway." She looked away. "He said he wasn't good enough for me. Needed time to think things over for himself. "

Severus laughed bitterly at the irony of all of it, but he did let her make him sit. "Not good enough for you? At least he, unlike James, wasn't as stupid as I thought, if he could see that," he said, his voice cold, but his eyes betraying him, showing that he really did care.

Lily turned to glare at him, at the cold tone in his voice. "I'm not hurt, Sev." I couldn't live with you hating who I was with, anyway. Even if I didn't want it to affect me, it would've messed things up anyway. That'd be true to say...but it'd hurt him too much. "It happened to fast anyway. We're still friends. He did nothing wrong. " Sev's always been there for me... but somehow I think that, in his eyes, NO ONE is good enough for his best friend. It's not like he'd LOSE me as a friend!

Severus didn't know what to do, what to say, what to think. So, he hadn't hurt her, at least. Maybe he hadn't been so bad after all... "I.. I'm glad. That you're not hurt, I mean," he said, his voice softer this time.

Lily kept her eyes away, but relaxed as she heard his tone grow less harsh. "He wasn't bad Sev. I told you. He just...wasn't right for me, I guess. "

Severus wanted to hug her again, but knew she wouldn't want him to, and wasn't sure he could lift his arms again anyway. He sighed, resting his head against the back of the tree, looking at her, at a loss for words. "I'm sorry," he finally said, knowing full well that it might mean nothing to her at all, but he had to say it anyway.

Lily turned to him, not glaring, just looking at him...a bit sad. "Are you Sev? You hated him. You said they're all the same....You do know that no matter if I was in a relationship...you wouldn't lose me. We'd still be best friends." She hugged him lightly, on impulse. "Thank you for caring...though....even if sometimes...it seems like you might care too much."

Her words angered him, though he knew she hadn't meant to hurt him. Yeah. We'd still be best friends. Ever the friend, aren't I... Severus looked her in the eye. "Yes. I am sorry. I had no right to act the way I did," he admitted. He hadn't. Even he knew that, even though he hated it. "I just... I worry about you. For you. All the time. The thought of you getting hurt, it's the scariest thing in the world to me, and I refuse to let that happen again," he said, returning her hug despite the pain.

Lily smiled at his words, for the first time in their talk, but moved his arms back to his side. "No, no hugging. No moving if that hurts. " She moved one hand by her side, the other rested on his arm. "Thank you Sev...though I do hope you'll realize that any pain of mine will heal, any danger I can face, with you by me. Knowing there's someone who is there for me."

Severus felt the coldness fading away with her words, and gave her a small smile when she rested her hand on his arm. "I'll always be beside you, as long as that's where you want me to be," he said quietly, knowing he'd never spoken truer words.

"Always," he said, feeling sick. Always here, waiting for you, waiting on you, being there when you need me, unable to say no to you, ever, and never once having you look my way. Always. Severus got to his feet, with some effort. "I.. I need to go, Lily," he said, trying not to show his hurt, but failing. "I.. Talk to you tomorrow, alright? Will I see you at the ball?"

Severus felt a bit of regret for asking Narcissa, but he hadn't known about her and Viktor then, and he wasn't going to ditch Cissa. "I.. I'd have gone with you," he said, looking at her regrettably. "If I'd known earlier."

Lily looked at him again. "Of course Sev, not at all. But I want you to have a good time there with her too. I mean, you're going with her, she's got to be a good friend of yours. " She stood up and walked over to where he was. "We'll both have fun, I won't mind however much time you spend with me compared to Narcissa. I'll have friends to dance with if you're with her." She smiled, and lightly patted his arm. "It'll be fun..I've got to go now though...i'll see you there though, Sev." With that, she turned and walked back up to the castle.

Severus waited until she was a safe distance away before taking the nearest rock and chucking it at a mouse, which it missed, 'cause Sev has no coordination, which is why he sucks at quidditch. "Fuck. Fuckity fuck fuck fucking fuckers fuck." He sat there mutterin jibberish to himself for a while, before deciding he was well enough to get to the common room.

Though can you spell out for me why Sev can't stop cursing? Is it just because of his frustration that he's going with Cissa and not Lily, more or less?]
