Severus smiled again as she leaned against him- she was so nice and warm, and he'd been feeling a bit chilly. He looked her in the eye, not fully convinced. "Doesn't mean I don't worry. I don't trust him. He hasn't been speaking to you at all?" he said, the doubt in his voice obvious. He wanted Lily, and he wanted her badly- he refused to believe he'd suddenly just stop chasing her about.

Lily's gaze didn't waver from the lake and she didn't move as she pondered a second oh her words before speaking.

"I didn't say he hadn't spoken to me at all. I said he hadn't bothered me."

Severus pulled his arm away quickly, gently pushing her face to look at him. "What do you mean, Lily?" he asked sharply, a horrible sinking feeling in his stomach. Don't tell me you're letting him back into your life, don't tell me you're trying to get yourself hurt by him again, was once not enough?

Lily glared at him and pulled a bit away from him so she wasn't leaning on him anymore.
"I mean he's been civil when we've spoken. Not that we're suddenly buddies, or together or anything." Her glare softened enough to be stern without such anger. "Sev, I was hurt...you know that. Did you think I was silly enough to just fall swiftly at his feet? Please tell me you've more hope for me than that. " She turned her harsh gaze back to the lake. Yes...just civil conversations...never mind me not wanting him out of my life...or that I don't hate him...but Sev can't know...he gets worried if I don't despise James.

Severus cringed when she glared at him, hurt by her words. "It's not like that, Lily! I just... you have no idea what it was like, to watch you do that to yourself, Lily. To see you letting yourself get into that mess, when I knew what would happen, knowing there was nothing I could do to stop it," he murmured, his hand dropping to his side. "I didn't mean that I don't think you can take care of yourself. It's just that we both know the truth; you always believe in the best in people, and you're always looking for the good in people, even when there isn't any. Some people haven't got an ounce of good in them, and you just don't see that, and it makes me worry for you," he said. He didn't realize it sounded like he was talking about James- he was thinking about himself when he said the words. He thought of what Hermione had said last night, the wound her words had made stinging again.

Lily closed her eyes, trying not to be angry. She wouldn't admit hit...but his words hurt. She didn't like feeling like she thought like a optimistic kid. "Everyone has SOME good in them, Sev. Every single person, wizard, witch, Muggle...pureblood, muggle-born...everyone. Nobody is pure evil, Sev. Maybe from a different view, maybe only sometimes...but nobody is always totally bad in every way. I don't care what you say or how naive you may think I am...everyone has some good. Everyone has darkness in them too. How much of each may vary..but nobody is all light or all dark..there has to be a balance. Maybe i'm a bit naive, or innocent..or ignorant..think what you want. "

Severus stood up and stared at her in disbelief. "Lily, how can you possibly believe that, when all evidence to the contrary is right here? Just look at us, Lily. There's you, you, you're perfect, you're so good, so pure, so... you. And then there's me. Lily, look at me. I know you're not stupid, and you're not blind either. There's nothing in me that isn't corrupt or bad. I don't know why you keep me around. Why should you, when you've got him?" he said, the pain in his eyes obvious. He grabbed his bag from the ground and turned to leave; he had no business being here, with her. His very presence around her was a sin in itself. "Granger was right about me. You're better off without me around. Go find your precious James, I'm sure he'll be happy to keep you company," he said with contempt, and stormed away, not looking back. He didn't want to leave, didn't want to leave her side, not now, not ever, but he had to. He couldn't allow himself to be around her, he didn't deserve her. Why had he ever thought she'd see anything in him? As much as he hated her, she'd been right- no matter what I do, or how much I give, it'll never be enough. I'll never be good enough.

[Sorry. I have to get some sleep, and we need to start straining their friendship, at least a little. Also, he's feeling like crap still about last night. Poor guy. Feel really bad for him.]

Lily turned and didn't know whether to be more angry or hurt. She stood up, taking a few swift steps after him, reaching as if she was going to try and reach his shoulder.
"Sev! Do you think i'd rather talk to..to Potter than you!? I thought we were FRIENDS, Sev! I-.."
I care about you...I wish you didn't hate yourself this way. You deserve better than that. I don't want to lose Sev as a friend.. "I wanted YOUR company, Sev. Guess this is your way of saying you don't want mine, eh? Maybe I will find Potter. I'd deserve no better company than his rotten self after making you needlessly despise me this way. " As long as this is just an argument..nothing serious... Her arm dropped and she practically collapsed to a seating position, tears slowly welling in her eyes as she watched him leave until he was out of sight and she turned back to the lake.

[He was supposed to hear everything she said, I just don't like making her yell by typing everything in caps. Not necessary for him to hear everything though. Except the italics. Italics are her thoughts. Pick and choose...but for both of their sakes don't make him hear it as if she wanted to be with Potter.

Lily walked down to the lake, sitting in the shade of her favorite tree and dropping the couple of research books she was holding onto the ground gently. She pulled a piece of parchment out of her bag, thankful it wasn't really a windy day, and began scratching out her homework, opening a book every now and then for reference.

Severus had been wandering the grounds for a good while now, trying to let off some steam. It was a sunny day, unlike yesterday, which was nice, even if he still felt like crap. He spotted Lily and walked over to join her, desperate for some pleasant conversation, after all the things that had happened. "Hey Lily," he said before breaking into another coughing fit. Stupid idiot. Did you not realize you'd get sick if you stayed in the rain that long? It was freezing yesterday!

Lily looked up at him and smiled. "Hey Sev!" At his coughing fit, her smile faded and she lay her books down. "Come on, sit down. That's a bad cough! Have you taken something for it?" Hope he didn't get himself in some more stupid drama...though it looks like he was caught out in the rain for quite a while.

Lily shook her head and sighed, but smiled. "Sev, you've got to take better care of yourself. At least you took a potion, if I had to give you one to help you heal, I'm sorry to say it wouldn't be the first time. Or second! That posture is probably better for your cold, instead of standing, anyway. " At his question, she shrugged, and leaned back against the tree. "Not much, really. Silly homework essays for Charms, Potions, and Transfiguration...time-consuming, though not difficult, thankfully. " And not hearing from James...but I guess he's just busy. She turned to him. "What about you?"

[Believe it or not, I had Lily be sort of a Healer even before I read SBP with her having a sort of tendency for it. ]

Severus laughed, not knowing where to begin. Oh, let's see, I got into a fight with Whoremione, I went crying to Pansy about Remus, Hermione, and you, you and James. I spent all fucking day crying in my dorm over you, that's happy, isn't it? And then Draco barged in and flipped out, and then tried to kill himself, and then Remus showed. OH! AND TAM, JUST AN HOUR AGO! Lovely! Lots of happy days! "Um... a lot? Just... stuff. Dealing with... people. Well, some people, and some pathetic excuses for human beings..." he mumbled, the last bit mostly to himself.

Sounds like a lot more than he wants to talk about...hopefully he isn't killing himself inside about it. Lily didn't voice her thoughts, but instead sighed attempting an encouraging smile. "Guess things aren't getting better quite yet..but they will." She paused, and looked him in the eye, her smile faded into a serious expression. "Is there anything I can do to help, Sev? You look troubled, and if you actually look troubled, it's probably quite a bit worse. Not my business, of course, just letting you know that you can't totally hide it from me when you aren't feeling well. I'll always try to be encouraging anyway." I'll pretend I didn't hear that bit about pathetic excuses for human beings...I probably don't want to know who he's talking about.
