"What are you working on? Need any help?" Maybe helping someone would help him take his mind off things. Or maybe it would make him think of his study sessions with Luna. Crap. He tried to steer his thoughts away from that, he didn't need to break down in front of a stranger.

She sighed and looked down at her paper. "Well. I have to write a 17 inch essay on Draught of the Living Death and it is due tomorrow and all the other students have known about this for over a week and today was my first day in classes and I still have to do it!" She said, now on the verge of tears. It was a long day.

"Are you a sixth year? I can help you if you want. I've already went through that. Wait, did you say it's your first day of classes? Where have you been all year?" He could sense that she was a little upset, and it was in his nature to try and make people feel better.

She nodded when she asked if she was a sixth year. "Yeah, it was my first day and it was terrible." She said, practically slamming her quill on the table. "Well, Me and my sister just transfered here." She said nodding. "We got here yesterday and started classes today."

"Oh! Well, welcome to Hogwarts. I'm Dean by the way, Dean Thomas." He tried to smile, but sort of failed. "And I can help you with that. Granted, potions isn't my strongest subject, but I don't mind helping."

She smiled at him. "Thanks. I'm Melanie, Melanie McCann." She said and looked down at her essay. "I mean, I can do the stuff, I am good at writing essays but not when I am only given one day." She said and frouted.

Dean recalled the name from the conversation he had earlier with James Sirius. "Nice to meet you. Well, if you need any help. Don't be afraid to ask. Where were you going to school before you came here?" He didn't really know anyone else from a different school..besides Viktor. Crap. Viktor...Angela. He was a dead man.

"Oh, I went to The Salem Witches' Institute, it's in the United States." She said nodding. "But it wasn't a very good school so my family wanted to move us to a better school." She said and smiled at him.

He was lost in thought and barely heard what she had said. "Oh, that's neat. Hogwarts is pretty cool, but I'm glad to be leaving at the end of this year.." He nodded.

She smiled at him. "Yeah, the people I have met have been pretty nice." She said nodding. "And the grounds are beautiful too...." She said and nodded some more. "So, you are a seventh year then? Yes?"

He finally made himself stop thinking of depressing things. "Oh yes, the grounds here are my favorite. I sit out there for hours drawing." He nodded. "Yeah, seventh year. Can't wait to be done."

She closed her book and leaned forward on the table. "So, what are your plans for after school?" She asked, wanting to not think about that essay anymore.

He was a little taken aback when she leaned forward. "Well, I want to do something with artwork, but my mom doesn't think I'll be able to do anything with that. So I'm studying to be able to do something with animals. But after I graduate I'm taking the traditional trip around the world."

She stared at him and grinned. "Wow...I am not going to lie that sounds really amazing." She said and grinned once again at him. "So you want to travel the world? Where are some of your top places to go?"

"Well, I'm going to take my mom to Paris first. Then I'll venture to Rome, China, Australia..with a pit stop to Fiji, then make my way over to the States, then back home again. Should be a good time."

She smiled at him. "That sounds like it will be a blast. So you have anyone to go on this adventure with you? Or are you going alone? Other than your mom for Paris.." She asked, not wanting to go with him, just curious if he was going alone or not.

"So far, just going alone. I'm usually pretty good at meeting people, so I'm not too concerned with being lonely or anything like that. Besides, after recent events, I'd rather like to spend the time solo." Why did he just say that? He was an idiot.

"Oh." She said and looked around awkwardly. "Did something bad just happen with you and a friend I am guessing?"

He shifted uncomfortably in his seat. He looked down at his hands that were folded on the table in front of him. "Yeah, I guess you could say that." A lot of messed things happened all in one night.

"Aww, I'm sorry." She said, sounding a bit concerned for him even though she barely knew the guy. "If you want to talk about it...I'm a good listener but I understand if you don't want to talk about it to some random girl you just met."

"You'd rather not hear. It's pretty depressing and I hate myself for the whole situation. I don't want to push that off on someone else. Thanks though." He attempted another smile, but failed again.

"Oh, Well Okay." She said and gave him a small smile. "Well, Just look on the bright side. I'm sure things should get better." She said nodding. "Things in life always get better."

He chuckled without any real humor. He was dealing with an Optimist right now. That used to be him, so he knew how annoying it got when people tried to disagree with him. "Doesn't feel like it, but I suppose it will eventually." He nodded.

"I know it will." She said and gave him a smile. "Because you seem like a good guy Dean and things always seem to work out for the good people in the world. Yup."

He couldn't help but smile at that. "Thanks. You're sweet. What house are you in? I'm sure I haven't seen you in Gryffindor yet..." He'd be able to remember her, he thought.
